Dissolution of titanium in acidic solution can be greatly increased by the adjunction of an external electric current. This electrochemical treatment is known as electropolishing. Under specific conditions, the process is well controlled and dissolution rate is higher on protuberance than in recesses. This results in a leveling and brightening effect. The treatment allows for the removing of small imperfections and provides a shiny surface finish even on complex shaped objects. In the above example, one can clearly observe the removal of the lines produced by the machining tool. The treatment was performed in less than 30 seconds, corresponding to the removal of a 5 µm layer.
